“COOKING IS LOVE MADE VISIBLE.”
For Roger, cooking was more than just a passion…it was part of who he was.
We all have a favorite recipe of his, or cherished memory around the table devouring the latest masterpiece. It was one of the many ways he expressed his love for us. Spending hours on not only the cooking, but also the preparation, to ensure he gave us only the best. It is undoubtedly one of the things we miss the most about him, which is the reason behind the creation of ‘Roger’s Kitchen’.
Saturday mornings he would play matchmaker between a new challenge he’d find in the New York Times and an old clipping from his collection. Once he got The Boss’s approval of the menu (Sophie of course!), off he went to gather the ingredients. As a kid, if you were picked to keep him company you knew it wasn’t going to be a ‘quick and easy’ shop. It would start with repetitive loops around the same aisles, followed by an irritating amount of time waiting as he examined each ingredient, concluding with the never-ending search for the last ingredient that no one had ever heard of! Once home, queue the opera music echoing through the house, the wizardry of his matchmaking coming to life and the occasional ‘Rog’!!’ from The Boss after witnessing him carelessly cut or burn himself, fully distracted by his creation.
His passion left us with hundreds of recipes clippings he had collected over the years. They have been photographed and uploaded onto this site for his loved ones to enjoy. We may not be able to successfully create these dishes to his standard, but we can take comfort from knowing how happy he would be for us to try!
I hope you find your favorite recipe and that by going through the collection it reminds you of a special meal you once shared. Together, let’s ensure his passion and joy is forever maintained throughout our family and friends, one dish at a time.
One last thing, don’t forget, cook with love.
